If you want to travel to the U.S. but are not a Canadian citizen, you will need a US visa. The U.S. government decrees that in order to gain entry into the United States, all landed immigrants in Canada must hold an up-to-date passport and a non-immigrant visa before they cross the Canadian – U.S. border. This includes citizens from countries within the British Commonwealth but does not affect those citizens from countries belonging to the Visa Waiver Program.
